GAH! Is dropping out the only answer?

Postby Kasuke » 06 Nov 2009, 11:00

Grade 12 Student.

Full Course Load.

International Business (M course)
English (University Level Course)
Challenge and Change (M level Course)
French (University Level Course)

I'm stressed to the max. I'm behind in a summative in Business, I have an essay due on Monday in business (still doing research, haven't found anything), and I have to keep up with current notes/work.

English, I have an essay outline, a small slide show presentation. And have to keep up with current classwork as well.

Challenge and Change, I have to make my statement on a Social Issue for Monday, and prepare a survey as well as continue with classwork.

French. I have to finish some grammar, answer Act 2 questions for Cyrano de Bergerac, prepare for an Act 1 and Act 2 Cyrano de Bergerac task as well as continue with class work.

I can't do it! I just can't. I don't have any form of internet, nor computer at home. Most of this stuff is computer work. I can access the library after school for an hour, and a public Library for 2 hours. a day. (School closes on weekends). There's just too much shit due. As well as to get a job. I honestly am not going to survive without money either. We need it. And my parents hassle me about OSAP not letting me lie to them so I ca get the money for college. Right now I have like $2000 put to college, and that's ot enough for my course. And that $2000 is what my parents owe me which they prolly won't pay back. And gah, so much work. I have a speech to do at the Legislature on the 19th!

It's just too much.

Don't tell me to take deep breaths.

Don't ttell me to focus on one task in whatever class I'm in.

Do not tell me to calm the fuck down whe I'm in tears!

It's just too hard.

Dropout?

What are the connotations of dropping out? Sounds like those are some pretty advanced classes for highschool. Do you already have enough credits to get your diploma? If so, then you might want to rethink going to college emmediatly next year and yes, maybe drop a few classes you might not need emmediatly.

My insight's not very good when it comes to this subject, since I'm not 100% sure how highschool works for you guys.

If you're afraid of not having the guts to go back to school after highschool if you go to work, then do this: Find someone you like. (A friend, a family member, anything) and make them a promise. If you break this promise, it's not just something you can forgive yourself for and move on in your life, there's someone else out there who's counting on you to do this.

So yes. If your course load right now is unbearable, which might eventually lead to you failing /all/ your classes, you might want to concider dropping one or two classes, just to get your highschool diploma. BUT, if you still think there's a chance that you can bounce back later on in the semester (Are they full year classes?), then just handle a few failures for now.

Finally (And from what I hear this doesn't actually work most of the time), try to ask your teacher for some extensions on your work.

Generally your courses are split into three different levels once you get to Grade 11 / Grade 12

College Level Courses - Generall preparation for college.
M level Courses. - Mixed Level courses that prepare you for College and University. It's like in the middle.
University Level Courses - Prepares you for University.

You need university level and M level courses to get into University.

You only need C - level courses to get into college.

I need 30 credits to graduate. I have 24 credits. So I can drop two in total, unless I would like to come back to highschool the next year.

But I'm just gonna run into the same problem. I'll get overloaded again ;-;

My friend just poked at me telling me he needs my part of a project in order to finish his and I snapped at him....very unstable at the moment >.<

I'm smart enough. I know my knowledge capabilities but...I just can't do it when they rush you.

But like my parents? They wouldn't let me drop out. And most jobs require "Highschool Diploma"

Why is my life so filled with pressure? I didn't do anything bad to put this on myself!

... I'm not sure about the need for University level classes to get into University. I'd look into that if I were you. I think those classes are more like... acredited in certain universities. So you don't have to take them again.

Keep in mind the universities we have in Ottawa: Carleton and UOttawa. Both of those accept a butt load of people. They accepted me without a proper highschool education.

Did you write an exam to get you in?

And it's already november...I don't know what to do. Mid-term, and I'm dropping a course? It sounds bad. If I could just do anything....whatever I wanted....

1. Get a place on my own

2. Get a computer and internet.

3. get better friends who care about your well being, rather than the workload. (At school, not you Poosh)

So what should I do? drop courses? Drop school in general?

If you drop out you'll probably regret it within a few years.

Unless you plan to start your own business, you're going to have a hard time finding work. And please please please don't say you're going to become a singer or something and support yourself that way. Not saying anything about whether you're talented enough, but there are millions of talented singers out there that can't support themselves with their singing.

Everyone is stressed these days, and to be honest man, you're a super nice guy and all but if High School is stressing you out this much than you're doing something wrong. You're either spending too much time doing other things that you shouldn't be (Everyone wishes they had free time to hang out with friends everynight, but that just isn't reality), or you're overloading yourself. Either way you need to get your shit together and do what you need to do to ensure your success.

You say 'don't tell me to focus on one thing!' but that's exactly what you need to do. You need to prioritize, you need to focus and you need to do it consistently. Sounds like you have a lot to get caught up on, so maybe running off to meets and hanging out with friends are things you're going to have to sacrifice in the short-term in order to find long-term happiness. When you finish High School you'll have roughly 65 - 75 years to do what you want to do, right now you need to do what you have to.

Go ahead and quit if you want, but mark my words, dropping out of high school isn't doing yourself any favors.

Just do what I did in high school if it's an option to you: Take an extra year in high school.

Why rush yourself into getting it all done in the 4 years? Take your time, and that 5th year will give you opportunities to take some 'fun' classes on the side that may interest you, since the majority of the compulsory credits will be done by the 4th year.

And as Meer said, learn to organize and devote homework time if you haven't. School is more important than your social life on weekends, more-so when you're in College/University.

Also
As well as to get a job. I honestly am not going to survive without money either. We need it. And my parents hassle me about OSAP not letting me lie to them so I ca get the money for college.

You don't want to lie to the government, ever.

You should probably focus less on college/uni at this point and just getting your high school diploma. Don't feel rushed to go straight to college/uni after high school. Get things on track first, or they'll just carry over and make things worse.
(which was my mistake, and am now trying to rectify it by having to work fulltime for a year)

But but....The Algonquin Guidance consellor told me to lie about OSAP.

And I do do time management. I only go out once a week. That's it. The rest is house working from my parents and the inability to do homework because I do not have access to computers/internet.

Things have gotten a bit better. I completed French, and Challenge and Change.

2 more...First priority is International Business since the essay is due Tuesday.

Thanks for the talking....Just needed some time to vent. (Also snapping at my friend for telling me I'm doing something wrong.) - That made me feel a bit better. (I know, it's sad.)

Anyways....Yay, a meeting! GSA meeting. Something I like.

If you've ever dealt with OSAP forms, you'd realize how much information they ask of your parents income before determining how much they should offer you. And they are able to check those numbers come tax time and see if there are any discrepancies.

You need a computer, so get one. I'm sure you can get a 'this runs Win98 oh well better than nothing' hunk of dinosaur for $50 or something.

Internet is another matter, but you should get a computer somehow. To do the basics you do NOT have to spend a bundle.
