Nasty Bedbugs, and other nasty things.

Postby Kakurady » 09 Oct 2009, 21:35

So thanks to Mat I just discovered those things ruining my bedsheets for six months are bedbugs. Those ones that bite for my blood. For six months. Eww, disgusting.

So thinking about it, I decided to call the landlord first instead of pest control, because who knows how much an extermination would cost me. But I'd probably pay for it anyway because he's a douche bag. Or maybe he isn't and the only reason I feel this way because he hires a disabled old lady to clean the toilet and bathroom, who complains, every time we meet, how the landlord made her overwork her legs for greed. That, and his method of dealing with repeated fridge coolant leak is getting a new fridge. That is so old you can't even find it on Google. And he haven't fixed the running water in the toilet problem. And he calls me by my first name as it appears on my passport, which has been spelled with an extra space and nobody really uses it. On top of that, I just can't remember his office hour (he doesn't post it) and since it's a long weekend, I won't be able to hear back from him for another three bitten days. ("It's okay, I've been bitten for months, three days is nothing.") I should get an estimate from some exterminators but not sure what else I should do. Maybe call the city?

On top of this I've heard getting prepared for clearing bedbugs out can be a lot of work. Clothes should be washed, mattresses changed, bed frame thrown out, and cleaning up the whole room, everything. Hopefully I don't have to send 5 metres of faux fur into the dryer.

In addition, I've skipped assignments. Again. And my classes just don't interest me. But this time, I can't help wondering if uOttawa is really that bad like Ramses said. Maybe mom was right, should have gone to a better school, but by now with such bad grades it is too late.
One of my class mates told me that in office, Software Engineers (like him) would design software and have CompSci grads (like me) to do most of the coding. :o Does that mean I'm learning to be nothing but slave labour? Come to think of it, bad grades and no experience, can I get a job after I graduate at all? I miss Shanghai and my family, but foreigners finding work in China? Fat chance...

I feel tired, worn out, and I don't know where to go for help. There are a lot of people online who care about me, but I don't know who has the time to listen, to wait for me to type all this out.

Thanks for reading all this.

lawl. Call the city man.

Pretty sure that's your landlord's responsibility to deal with pests and infestations, or at least compensate you if you pay for it yourself. I don't rent right now so I've never looked at tenant rights in Ottawa. I'd take a look online and find a government website that'll outline your rights as a tenant, and his legal responsibilities as a landlord.

If he doesn't deal with it, he can get in a serious amount of shit for it, I think.

yeah man those pricks at the city administration have plenty of invasive power to go fuck shit up for that landlord. you don't have to live like that.

also, if you're having a career crisis, consider taking a year off school.
i know a couple damn good companies looking for decent people.

Seconded.

There's money just piling up for people willing to get into the trades. Everyone's going into technical careers but very few people are going into the trades, it's good money and if you enjoy building shit with your hands then you're set.

I was tempted at one point to actually get into carpentry, was in the process of looking for an apprenticeship somewhere but ended up deciding to get into teaching instead.

I have only one piece of advice to provide, at least that hasn't already been.

Stay somewhere else until this is sorted.

Just to show what a lazy cat I am, I still haven't called the city or an exterminator yet.

I have no other place to live, and even if I did, can you imagine bringing potentially bedbug-infested clothings to another place? Sure, they usually don't go on clothes... but I don't want to give the gift of blood-sucking beasts to someone else, thankyouverymuch...

Last time someone found bedbugs in their bed in our apartment building, the entire building had to be lightly fumigated.

That's because it's the only way to get rid of them... The entired building have to be treated otherwise there are strong chances they'll come back after a short time.

That sucks ass, because they're very, very difficult to get rid of. In fact, it would be easier to just move out and find another place. I know that sounds pretty hardcore, but I've heard that if they're not treated properly, they'll just keep coming back over and over again.

According to the Ottawa city health department, you should get in contact with them if you haven't already.
