I need some Advise x.O

Postby Smiley101 » 16 Sep 2009, 23:16

So, for the past 4-5 months I've been trying to make some music, I never really though it would be any good and then I make these 5 really good songs and I was happy. And then somehow, someway, I saw the oh so famous Renard and his work and now I just can't seem to get myself motivated to do anything anymore. And yes I know he has years of experience and all that bullshit its just I can't find it in myself to keep trying to top him when the ladder is set so high. And also that my work is hardly looked at, commented on or anything and I understand that it gets better but I just can't see that x.O. I just need someone out there to tell me how you keep yourself motivated to do art, music, or whatever.

This is also spilling into rl as I can't seem to push myself to do anything anymore and its starting to piss me off. Its like I have no work ethic or anything. I mean, I could be a good artist, if I tried. A good music maker, if I tried. Or anything. I just can't get enough self confidence to go forward.

Anyone have an ideas?

No advice anyone can give you on this one really.

Either you'll get over it and keep going, or you won't.

LOTS of people give up on things because they get discouraged.

Though I will say, since when is the point of doing something you enjoy having other people like it? If your entire motivation for making music is to get lots of credit and admiration for it, maybe you're looking at it the wrong way and THAT'S causing the discouragement.

Real artists do what THEY like, and sometimes other people agree. Not always, but sometimes.

The mother of learning is repetition, the father is patience.

The damn hard part is patience, and I feel you on that. I wanted to play guitar, went and bought one, got lessons, never practiced and got frustrated and gave up.

Everything that I am good at, computers, customer service, juggling, gaming, WoW, hacksack; these are things that a gave The Golden Two in abundance. Most of these things were extremely fun/interesting to me, so it was easy to have the patience and to apply repetition.

Focus on these two, and you'll get someplace, promise!

Practice practice practice, and a whole lot of time generally.

There are of course, the odd naturals out there that you just want to run over with a car a few times, then get out and shoot a few times, then beat to mush with a baseball bat....

But that said they are generally few and far between and everyone else has had to work at it. But in the end, do it for the love of doing it, and not because you want to become well known.

Just because someone has set a high bar doesn't mean you're automatically required to surpass them. Most people will hear someone of blinding talent and appreciate it and hear someone who tries really hard and like them as much if not more. Do what you want to do in your style, practice always and always work on improving.

Set yourself some goals like: By December I want to be able to achieve [technique] with [instrument of choice] or something. Don't work to go TOO far out of your reach each time because if you go right to the hard stuff without learning the easy and moderate stuff, you'll never get there and you'll only frustrate yourself. Getting good at any art form is the work of years of practice and repetition. Devote time daily to your craft (even just half an hour) and rock on, man. You'll get it.

Make it unique to yourself.
Change it up.
That way, comparisons won't work anymore, and you can stop stressing and learn to enjoy the process again.
Amidst the mists and fiercest frosts,
With barest wrists and stoutest boasts,
I thrust my fists against the posts,
And still insist I see the ghosts.

throw some samples together. i'll buy them.
then spin some nu skool breaks or electro rock. i'll buy samples and if they're good, i'll buy a whole bunch of music off you.

That's some pretty good stuff, man! Wicked-cool. Spaz and I briefly collaborated on some music a while ago. Wouldn't mind getting into that again sometime. We had this idea of a furry musical collective. Different people contributing different abilities to make different songs all under one banner.
