___ She Sat Down ___

“There once was a black haired girl.  During her teenage years, this girl did not have much going for her.  She was never ridiculed in school, but never praised either.  At 16, she never had the pleasure of having a boyfriend, and she never did anything exotic or interesting.  As she sat in class, day after day, her mind would wonder back and forth between consciousness and her dream state; in which she pictured herself in various situations.  Her biggest fantasy was that she dreamt of being a rock star.  Tuning back to the lesson given, the teacher would go on about the study of some tribes living on some remote Asian islands.  She wavered back to her dream land, where she imagined herself slicing her way through a thick jungle, exploring every corner of the world.  A loud voice forced her back to reality, the dream swirling back into the recess of her mind as the tutor began screaming at her for seeming asleep.  She clutched to the last images of her personal dreams before being forced to listen to the lesson.  The images in her mind displayed a brilliant, vibrant and beautiful woman in a long, white coat, holding in her hand the cure to every known disease.

One day, after a week of an odd sickness, she discovered she was pregnant.  Probably because of that blackout from a couple of weeks back after an outing to a bar.  She couldn’t sleep for the next few days, falling asleep in her own tears three days later, the overlapping images of her dreams swallowed by her own mind, the pink stained pregnancy test haunting her dreams.

The visit to the doctor was a life changing event.  She learned that she wasn’t pregnant.  It was a mistake; A false positive.  Her heart felt light, she felt like she was floating, her life saved.  From that event, it was then that she realized that anything can happen… so she had best see her dreams through while she had the chance.

She exited the doctor’s office and immediately made her way to the music store, buying herself a microphone, a paper pad and a pen.  Mere months later, she was invited to biggest events of her school.  Years later, she was invited to the largest events of her city and soon found herself on a national stage, singing songs that soothed the mind.  Her music was recognized internationally as a sound that could make the saddest person crack a smile.

She used her fame and amassed fortune to travel far and wide.  She visited, explored and studied every part of the earth known to man, and even some that had yet to be soiled by humanity’s foot.  She collected information, specimens and flowers from many diverse and exotic jungles, forests and deserts.

After having explored the four corners of the earth, she used her knowledge, money and fame to fund research into cancer.  She went to University.  She graduated 10 years later with a medical doctorate, helping to further her own research.  Soon, she had found a cure.  Not just for Cancer, but to the ones that brought the most pain and sadness to the ones around her.

She girl had become all this and more.  Praise of her accomplishments resonated throughout the world.  The influence she had remained with humanity for the rest of its existence, gaining her rightful place in history.  What made her happy more than anything else though, was knowing that she got to do exactly what she wanted with her life.

And that’s the end of the story”

She said, finally.  The black haired girl got up from her chair, bags hanging beneath her eyes, the tired and exhausted frame of the young mother mechanically getting up from the chair next to her newborn child’s bed.  She walks towards the door, closing the light in the room behind her and extinguishing the dreamy sparks in her eyes before exitting the darkened room.
