Looking for a bit of Help.

Postby Smiley101 » 10 Oct 2009, 00:52

Atm, I'm trying to get down the basics of drawing furries. I can do sides pretty well and I'm getting pretty good at bodies, bit I just keep having this problem of attaching heads to the bodies and making it look good. I'm also considering working with a more abstract style like street art (graffiti) or something like that. Does anyone know any good sites with some tutorials or a good book with some useful tips?

I'm also trying to get a little help with how to do lineart.

My girlfriend found a series of books on sale at Chapters. They were these soft cover books that were going for like $5 each or something. One was a book on anatomy (for the body) another was figure drawing, another was backgrounds. There was one on animals as well but it was out of stock. You might look for something like that. Alternately, you can play with proportions until it works.

Are you starting by drawing the head or the body?

My advice? Draw from life, and if you're going to eventually do characters, start with humans. Almost every organic bipedal is derived from the human form, so master that first, and then learn to adapt it to other forms and styles.

Don't just jump into anthropomorphic animals without that basic understanding, or you'd end up with results as bad as anime artists who jump straight up into that style from the get go, and typically rarely improve (or get completely locked into the style, making them useless for other things)

Unfortunately there's not much I can recommend as far as books go that teach the techniques one can use for drawing (such as drawing with construction), as my art library consists primarily of reference materials (lots and lots of references...) and animation techniques/principles.

There's a bunch of exercises you can do. Including drawing pages after pages of -just- necks. Another good one (to expand on drawing from real life), try to draw without ever looking at your picture. Helps you get an idea of where your hand is with your sixth sense (The notion of where your limbs are in space. Arguably a sense, but I'm just refering to it as such here). It will help you actually draw what you want to see once you look at the paper again after a while. This is especially useful for people who are able to visualize things well. For others, it will help startup this capacity.

Like they said best way to do things is by taking it from life .... but that can be hard sometimes I know ... If your like me i know what helped me out the most was someone who really knew what they were doing critiquing well in this case my school work. I know myself I'm not good at teaching myself i just need that person there too point out stuff that will improve the drawings.

but like my teacher keeps drilling at us find some real life reference either on the web or even act out what ever the pose your wanting and take pics just so when you get to the point where you have trouble with like attaching the neck you can study the photo making it easier to get right ^^

Anyways if yah need some help on some pics or something I don't mind helping out as much as i can ^^ still learning lots but I'm getting pretty good with stuff now.
So if yahr interested yah can either send me a note with a link or e-mail or over msn ^^ (malandus@hotmail.com)
