the Holy crap Malware sucks thread

Postby Red » 20 Oct 2009, 15:30

OK so while im sitting here waiting for 10 drivers and 20 odd programs i like get finished downloading or copying from dvd to finish i thoughts id open a thread on it since capitals furs was the first of the sites that i can remember on my bookmarks that i again forgot to backup before purging my harddrive.

righto.. antivirus 2010 is a horrible maleware and id love to meet its creator to do mean things to.

task manager disabled
regedit disabled
group setting edit disabled
safemode disabled (when you try to safemode xp it just restarts computer)
infecting external harddrives (hurray for a 1 TB paperweight i now own untill i find a computer guru)
corrupting files (half my program files folder toast. favorite programs and settings that will take a very long time to setup again.. oh woe is me my wow addon folder is gone.. im doom :P)
IE, Chrome, Firefox all infected even safemode versions of them meaning i was unable to get any information on how to get rid of the virus/maleware
hijacking of my mouse to make erratic movements
keyboard layout scrambled

it was one epic piece of work.. and nothing pisses me off more than having to dig up my xp disc and hardware drivers disc. 4 hours so far trying to put things back together.
Im sure there is a way to outsmart the bug but i wasnt able to find it so Whoosh format reinstall ftw kinda.

ok so im back using a free version of AVG and on google chrome. any free tips on getting more protection? and possible what i would want to do to make sure i could plug in my external and get it clean without formating it. hundreds of movies and thousands of tunes must be saved.

All I can say is what I do.

Two partitions, system on one, inert files on the other [music, pictures, etc].

Run zero antivirus.

Reinstall once a year or so.

Use firefox with NoScript, or Chrome. Disable IE.

Only use trusted sources for downloads.

I've had a great deal of success in avoiding malware with the dynamic duo of the free avast antivirus and spybot.

Wha? Never use limewire [nor anything like it], avoid torrents with less than 100 seeders, don't click on any ads ever, and you will be hard pressed to get anything viral.

If you do download low seeded torrents, read the comments. I never look at how many seeds there are; I look at how many comments there are. I run Avast! myself, but I do hear there's better around. And by the way, Windows Defender actually works -really- well.

As for your driver disks... unless you're running intensely old hardware, SP3 of windows should be able to auto-fetch your drivers like windows 7 does.

Very good advice as well.

I don't know how many torrents I was going to download and then, whoops, twenty comments saying it's malware, skipped!

Malware ate my computer recently :( I found a new anti-virus program called "Avast!" which I've been using to keep away all the nasty stuff, and so far it's done an amazing job. It's free to download, if you want to try it.
