Wide disrepancies in furry genus diversity

Postby BCRE8TVE » 29 Aug 2009, 23:55

Now that I've caught your attention with a pointlessly long and complicated title, here's the biggie.

How come most of what I see are about huskies, wolves or foxes?

Now I don't have anything against them, I was just wondering how come furry art and litterature are almost swamped by these three species alone? From where I stand, a fox is a very pretty, furry, and fluffy animal, but that's about it. I can't understand the overabundance of vixens that seems to be the norm, or huskies and wolves for their male counterparts. How did this happen? Where did this come from?

I honestly have no idea, that's why I'm posting it up here :P I'd really like to know what this is all about.

I think it's because they're popular. A lot of people, at least in my experience, chose their favourite animal, right? And I guess they hold a lot of traits that people wish for themselves... Wolves/Canines are loyal, strong, tough, etc. Foxes/Vixens are sly, mischievous, beautiful, and everybody's favourite =P

Me? I'm a cat. Just a silly ol' black cat.
And I'm lazy, just like a cat. I sleep all day, I worry too much about what I look like (sometimes), and I can be easily distracted by a sparkly object. What else do you need? XD

If you use Fchan at all, they actually do have threads dedicated to 'insects' xD

Though yeah, I agree with ya totally. People pick them because using the stereotypical furre as an example, wolves/foxes/etc are generally everything they aren't. Strong, handsome, etc... plus, it's what they know. Not a lot of people know about bizarre species from Africa or from the Rain Forest, so they don't pick those.

What I don't get is why people who have spiritual connections with animals are always connected to the "cute" ones.
Wouldn't it make more sense to be connected to something far more common than a fox or wolf, like an ant or a beetle?

In terms of fursonas and characters people use, there are so many underused and unused species that it makes me sad.

Well most people want to go with the animals they love and connect to, and not what's rare and unused -- although I have seen people jump at attempts of using more 'rare' species... less because they like the species and more because they want to be unique.

Also, would an insect even BE a furry? Wouldn't it be... I don't know, a buggy?

If dragons, which are also not technically "furry", can be both part of the furry fandom and very common, why can't bugs?

Are foxes, Huskies, and wolves really the only three animals people like? Seems like it in furry fandom sometimes.

I think I saw this on another forum..
I would like to add, that I disguised my furry side when I was younger as my attempts at being a werewolf fan. Why? Because my parents raised me to hide things like that from them.
