Upgrading to PHPBB3 - THIS SHIT IS IMPORTANT

Postby Ironklaw » 18 Aug 2009, 16:15

Alright, we looked through the stuff that we can do with this forum and discovered that it can be upgraded to PHPBB3, which will add a HOST of new features. (See http://www.phpbb.com/about/features/ for a full list)

We're planning on doing it but the forum might be down for a bit in the meantime. I'm also not positive that ANY of the topics will still be there.

In the meantime, the current incarnation of the forum will be moved to a different server with a different URL. We're looking into doing it this weekend. Please let us know what you think.

I would have to agree with Indy. I went through the list of new features, and I can understand why you would want to do it...
But I'm happy with the forum the way it is  :)

I hear you. The administrative options alone would be worth the upgrade as it would make running the site way smoother. That with the ability to add attachments, we wouldn't have to link pictures from photobucket anymore.

Does myfreeforum allow you to backup the database?  It wouldn't surprise me if there are mods for phpBB3 that allow it to import existing information from other forum board types.  Would beat having everyone re-register for instance.

For the most part.  Only real benefit other than frills, would be increased security.  This forum software is 7 years old.  I'm pretty sure a script kiddie could easily tear this place a new one if they wanted via old exploits that never got patched in.

I'm fairly sure it backs up the memberlist. I'm not sure about the threads and mff.org is pretty basic. I'll post the information they have on upgrading. I took a screen shot of the administration section.

(I know it's cut off on the side, it displays like that on the page. For serious.)

Anyway, see if you can glean a little something from this.

Whoohoo! Finally the day comes!

With a stock PHPBB2/PHPBB3, most stuff should migrated in an update - notably, PHPBB3 doesn't support HTML in post anymore. But it's difficult to say when the code have been heavily modded...

I prefer to stay away from "free X hosting" not only because they tend to be banned in China, but also because the users and the admins aren't in control of their data, making it difficult if they want to move somewhere else.
Constantly depressed in the last week... I need a good hug.

Doesn't really matter when HTML doesn't work for users anyways in phpbb2.

Well, for one, this is Capital Furs, catering to primarily locals, not people residing in China (China's own fault for trying to censor the internet to prevent free speech anyways).  Next, free forum works fine long as its from a place that won't shut down overtime.  And third, you want to pay the bill to host on a dedicated server?  :P

@ IK

If it's all automated for you, it shouldn't be a problem.  Didn't know the myff guys already supplied the means necessary to upgrade a forum.

Not that I want to, but it's a nice option to have in case myff got hit by a bus.

some day we might get our own hosting (lord knows we talked about it in the past. It often boiled down to techies ragging on a good part of the ideas, everyone getting frustrated and walking away from the project. Besides, this really does work fine for us. An upgrade won't hurt. Besides, this version of the forum will always be available.
