I hate the news. I hate this world. So much. I was watching CNN in my cafeteria. They had 5 minutes on Afganistan... this is tolerable. It is a big issue even if I don't agree with their view. Then they had a 20 minute special about how a balloon shaped like a UFO was a balloon shaped like a UFO and not aliens. NO DUH. Why did this get more coverage THEN ANYTHING ELSE? Next I look at the Sun and see, "Drunk Driver crashes into house and sets it on fire" okay- this is interesting but really, is this the most important even in Ottawa? I mean other than the guy who crashed his car, the home owner, and people who know them, does it really matter that this happened? Not really. It's a random isolated incident that has almost no bearing on the rest of the world. Seriously...

I watch CTV news/CBC news. So much less depressing.

The internet can help. I know I'm a faggot, but Reddit can sometimes help sift through a lot of the filth on the news.

I think it's because news like the war in other countries is on-going and considered "old news", thus people lose interest quickly, so they try to spice it up with random occurrences to get people's attention.The balloon boy was a big deal because at the time they honestly thought a child was in that balloon, which pretty much meant he was dead. But it was just revealed to be a hoax, and now the family is in huuuge shit.

I understand why it happens. It just bothers me how OFTEN it happens and how really trivial (To the average person) most the news is. Someone getting murdered really doesn't effect me. A grade 6 class adopting a cat doesn't really affect me either. News should be like... stuff that effects our changing world, major issues, not drama and spectacle- save that for the tabloids and gossip mags. (Which are fine to read and stuff because they at least are what they claim to be)

Main reason I listen to CBC Radio One on FM. They don't have the air time to waste devoting more than 5 min to any given subject due to lack of video padding.

TV news on the other hand....it's all about sensationalism, and 'UFO' grabs more attention than "Oh hey, there's uh...stuff still happening over in Afghan.".

I work at the Ottawa Citizen and I'll tell you that those fluff articles about nothing in particular are what maintain a sense of levity in those papers so that the news isn't always depressing. If it were, people wouldn't buy newspapers. Same with TV News.
