Power Outlet Hogs!

Postby Meer » 28 Feb 2009, 10:45

Anyone here attend University and use a laptop to keep their notes?

Anyone do this in a classroom that has limited power outlets?

Yes? Then you know what I'm talking about here!

I'm sitting in class right now and while I still have plenty of battery charge left on my laptop, I'm reminded of the times when I'm stuck being only partially charged in the middle of class with the risk of running out of battery power before the class is over.

What reminded me of this? There's only about 4 power outlets in the classroom, and right now 2 of them are being blocked by students that 1) don't have laptops but 2) Are sleeping! Because of the placement of the outlets there's only a few seats that are able to reach them, and it annoys me when there's plenty of open seats throughout the classroom but people without laptops take all the seats around the power outlets!

Usually they'll move if you ask, but there've been a few times when they haven't, and I mean, seriously? That's just rude and obnoxious. The newest building actually offers outlets at -every- seat, they built them right into the tabletop. That's awesome, I enjoy being able to plug in my laptop if I have to without having to sit at a specific seat, but unfortunately a large number of the classrooms don't offer this feature.

I really wish they'd institute a 'priority seating' policy like they have on buses, seriously. If you have a laptop, you should be able to get a seat beside one of the outlets if you need it, if you don't have a laptop there's like 328529359250932590239052985 other seats you can choose from that are just as good as the one you're taking that's possibly causing other people to be unable to take notes!

Ugh. Just a pet peeve of mine. I've had my battery die before because I'll be in a 3 hour class and can't get at an outlet, and it's extremely annoying.

I'd say, complain about it to either the rm teacher, or some authorities.. Surely they can manage to seat up people accordingly, that's not fair to people who want to progress in life, unlike the losers sleeping near the resources.

Seriously?  Pay attention in class and print out the notes... or that's what they'll say if you complain, at least :P.

Yes, I know of this, but I'm almost always early to class, so it doesn't bother me that much :P.

Unless there's no online component to the class. One of my courses doesn't utilize Virtual Campus -at all- and most of the others only give point form notes online, and elaborates in class.

If there's no online component, why do you need your laptop at all :P?

I know what you're saying and playing devil's advocate here, but most my professors blanket ban laptops if there's no online component in the course.

Because my teachers don't ban them, and it's easier to take notes on a laptop? x3

Your cord isn't long enough to reach from different seats though?  I dunno... I guess it's different with computer sciences.  Our teachers let us plug ourselves into their podium things in front.  They know we need our computers.

You should simply set the hogs on fire. Then you would have outlets and tastey bacon

It can, but those seats are usually filled with other people trying to get at the outlet, or don't have laptops either. One or the other x3

Like Marion Auditorium... seats 450 students, has 2 power outlets :P

I suppose you could always bring a powerbar... but that's a real hassle.
